Casino debate

My view points

The Singapore casino debate currently underway lies against a backdrop of increasing economic urgency, combined with concern over casino gambling's potentially negative social effects. Pragmatists view casino gambling as an unstoppable worldwide phenomenon that has the potential to bolster the small nation's slowing economy. Conversely, moralists in this notoriously conservative country fear the social consequences legal casino gambling is likely to bring. Before building the casino, Singapore will have to reverse a 40-year old ban against casinos. The government's decision regarding the ban is expected to be announced on April 18th.

The new and refurbished casinos of the IR have just recently opened its doors to the public. The hotels, packed in with the IR facility, are also proving to be a hit among the visitors of the casinos. The hotels are almost fully booked everyday, some by “money hungry” Singaporean. They just can’t bear to live so far away from the casino, so why not just live beside it.

The government sees the IR as an opportunity to boost the country’s economy. However, in order to curb the overuse of the casino by the locals, the government has imposed some laws and levies. For example, all Singaporeans have to pay a levy of $100 before they can enter the casino. The government hopes that this would deter the locals from the casinos, but I see no effect. The locals are just too happy that there are casinos in their own homeland. I believe the levy should be increase to about $300 or more. That would make the locals wonder whether to enter or not.

Interpersonal Activity 1

Views of friends or family members on prejudice and discrimination

Interviewee: Father

Prejudice: The thought of someone or something is inferior to you or a general group of audience. For example, people might think that autistic children might be less clever than they are but they are just like any child, with only a learning difficulty.

Discrimination: The physical act of showing prejudice towards an inferior personal or a group of people. For example, white people have discrimination against the black people, Negroes, just because of their skin colour. They think that the blacks are their slaves. They are separated, marginalised from the common community as they are physical not allowed into restaurants containing white people in the past. Although the situation has died down in the 21st century, there are still discrimination between the blacks and the whites.

Linguistic Activity 2 (Newspaper report)

Death of an addict. Boon or Bane?

Does the eradication of a morphine addict make the world a better place to live in?

Many might think so, but some might not. For the people of Maycomb country, those who knew the personality of Mrs Dubose might know that she is a little cranky. Her “past-time” was to shout, scream and scold passer-bys. However, people that have a close relationship with her might not think so.

“She is a courageous and strong old lady”, said by Mr. Atticus Finch during her funeral.

Autopsy have shown that Mrs. Dubose have died from a redrawal morphine addiction symptom. According to Mr. Atticus Finch, he answered that the reason why he believe Mrs. Dubose is a strong woman because she was willing to take the fits from the redrawal of morphine addict than to die with a corrupted body. She knew that her time was up and wanted to die drug free.

“Please show respect and give appropriate condolences to Mrs. Dubose,” Mr. Jem Finch told the reporters.

Discovering your Learning Profile

I did complete the MIDAS profile test last year but due to my forgetfulness, I have misplaced the paper and thus, I have decided to redo it. After the short, 40 question test, the results have shown that I excel in the area of linguistic and interpersonal.

According to Wikipedia, being good in the aspect of linguistic is having a good grasp of the scientific study of natural language. In simpler terms, that means I am good in languages, although my Chinese results do not show that! The test also testifies that I am an interpersonal guy. An interpersonal guy can work well in relationships with friends or family. An interpersonal guy would also watch his or her words so that they would not offend the other party.

However, I believe that the learning profile test might not be accurate because it claims that I would successfully find out your personality in just 40 questions. Only true friends and family members that you have good relationships with can tell your true personality. So, those that have taken the test should not allow a 40 question test to affect their lifes and their mindset on the world and people around them.
